GBTU and NepRWA Host Mass Free Fishing Weekend

Board members John Lefeber, Victor Colella, and Chris Hirsch hosted a GBTU introductory fly casting and fishing event on Massachusetts Free Fishing Weekend at Ponkapoag Pond. The group enjoyed coffee and donuts at the Neponset River Watershed Association headquarters in Canton MA before instructing new anglers in the basics of fly fishing.

Once everyone had casting down, they hit the water at Ponkapoag and caught Bluegill, Perch and even a few good sized Largemouth Bass. The success of the day shows how warm water fish offer a great learning opportunity for young or new anglers in a low stress and low barrier of entry environment.

Much fun was had and many fish caught and released. Big thanks to our friends at NRWA for hosting such a great day. If any readers are interested in volunteering at similar events, please reach out to jlefeber@gbtu.org or rcoelho@gbtu.org
